I've always found mine to be very good. Based on my experience with my old fuji, I bought 5 extra batteries for the 20D when I got it, as I can be blazing away all day at some events. Never needed them all, one is all I need to carry as a spare (although I carry more 'just in case'). I can shoot for most of a day on one battery, racking up 1,500 + shots. I did manage 2,000 + in about two hours once and the battery indicator was still showing full.
It should be noted that I don't do a lot of chimping, just an occasional glance at the histogram to check my settings, nor do I have the camera set to show images on the LCD as they are shot, there is no flash used at these events, but I do use IS lenses (generally the 100-400L). Also, most of my batteries are the cheap non-branded ones which are rated at 1500mAh, rather than the Canon ones which are only 1300mAh, however I haven't noticed the Canons being significantly shorter lasting.
I tend to put a fully charged battery in at the start of the day and only need to change (if at all) towards the end of the event.
I suspect that the amount of time the camera is switched on is more significant than the actual number of images taken in that time.
