If you get a chance please help me out here. I posted this thread https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=291860
and seem to have problems with noise . I think my camera should do alot better with the 400mm lens. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.

Reply posted - you have some weird noise artifacts in your images as well. Were you sharpening the shots in post processing as well to try to get a sharper image?

Some of the images you posted (7, 8 & 9) look like they were underexposed and then corrected in post processing. Also, what shutterspeed were you using for all of these images? I suspect a couple may be soft due to some motion blur.

Were these straight from the camera as jpeg with zero corrections or were they shot in RAW? What were your USM settings when you sharpened in post processing?

I am posting a 100% crop from the camera now. I have no idea what I am doing but yes these all were sharpened in pp. All shot in Jpeg.

My reply from that thread: These shots all look quite normal to me. I don't think anyone claims that a 20D shoots noise-free at 400 even. You might use the Despeckle filter to remedy some of that, but it's no worse than expected, IMO.

Did you also use Curves, Levels or Brightness in pp for a few of them?

Adding contrast will contribute to the noise issue. Proper exposure and post processing will eliminate most noise, especially at 400 ISO. Don't be afraid to use your histogram to monitor exposure.

It sounds like the images were a bit under-exposed, which is what I expected. You can get very clean images at ISO 400 if the exposure is spot on.
