Does it matter which softbox?

I am really wanting to get a large softbox, I just can't spend 400.00 doing it. I was looking at an AB softbox. Any suggestions? Thanks

You might want to seriously consider a large diffusion panel instead of a fixed size light source such as a softbox. If you're on a budget and can only get one or two things then my suggestion is to get a diffusion panel for your main light and a larger silver umbrella for your fill. You can get both for under $200 and have a much more flexible setup than if you got a large softbox.

In general more expensive softboxes are typically more rugged (Photoflex, Chimera, etc). So, they are more suited to many setup and tear down cycles.

But, there is really no difference in the quality of light that you get from most softboxes, even the inexpensive ones. I have personally used Chimera, Photoflex and numerous inexpensive softboxes and they all produce an appealing light.

If you intent to set up and tear down a lot (no fixed studio) the more expensive ones are likely to be a better choice.

If you only use the softbox a few times a year, or intend to set it up in a studio and just leave it set up, then the less expensive ones are still likely to be fine.

I'm waiting on those AB folding ones to debut

I don't have a studio yet, I do location work or in my living room. I looked at the AB folding ones. That is what I was leaning toward until the diffusion panel was metioned. Any more thoughts?
