Hello all,

I'm the proud new owner of one of Canon's fine 300mm f/2.8 lenses. The only gripe I have is the strap's a pain in the neck, so I want to replace it with something more comfortable.

I was thinking about using something from Op/Tech (I already own one of their Pro straps which I used with a 100-400 and think they're great), but I'm not convinced they'll handle the weight of the 300mm plus a 1D mk2n (around 4kg in all) and can't find any information about the maximum weight an Op/Tech strap can handle (it's more the quick release connectors I'm concerned about).

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience as to the best comfy strap to get for this lens and body combo?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Ben

I have the same question for the 200 f/1.8, which coincidentally is about the same weight.

I've never seen the Canon strap for these lenses, but I have cobbled up a solution for the EF 200mm f/1.8L and 500mm f/4L IS

I use sometimes one, and sometime two POTN Op-Tech pro loop straps.. ( one on the lens one on the body) they are easily removable .. just buy yourself some extra loops so you can leave that part on the lens.. so switching the rest from one lens to another is a breeze.

The Op tech handles the weight of the 500mm just fine, but I still like to keep the body strap on most of the time just in case.

I've used the POTN strap (on the 300) w/ 300 2.8IS + 2xTC + 5D w/ grip + 550EX. NO problem.
Sometimes I have just the 300 + bogen 682B, no issues.

Happy Shooting!

Thanks for the info, I'll give my existing op/tech strap a try and see how it goes.

Cheers,
Ben

BTW, thought I'd contact op/tech to find out the max weight their strap can handle, turns out it's 7kg (15lb). They pointed me to their reference chart which lists all the weights for all their straps. Can be found at http://www.optechusa.com (external link), go to Reference Sheets and then Strap Reference Chart to get the pdf list.

Cheers,
Ben

So that should be fine for the 300 or 200. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with it on my 400 f/2.8.

By the look of it the strap's rated to take the weight of a 400 f/2.8 and 1d body, but is your neck? ;-)a
