I would like to see your use of this photographic technique. The contest will be judged on the creativeness of your subject and it's background. I find this technique real difficult to master. Hopefully you can present great photo's to keep us motivated at practicing this technique. Good luck!

"Going Home"

Every year, Tundra Swans make a Spring migratory run from their wintering areas on the Eastern Atlantic coast to their breeding grounds along the Arctic coastline. They depart the Atlantic coast in February and arrive at their destination in May and June. I live within 5 minutes of one of their major Great Lakes lay-over areas, where they will spend 3 to 4 weeks before continuing their journey. Forgive the narrative please, but I find migrations like this fascinating.

Caught at a drift event last summer, which was also my first (and only so far) pan practice. It was a real bright sunny day, I had no filter, so even with a small aperture and exposure compensation set at it's lowest, I could barely reach a slow enough shutter speed.

Future Skeleton Participant

I just happened to catch this when my son decided that he needed to use this sled. The snow was soft so it really wasn't going fast so it took a lot of quick thinking to get this shot. A fraction of a second later he was stopped because the rails had sunk in too deep into the snow. Hopefully it seems like he has some speed.

I took this one out of my files (when I had an S2). I blurred the background a little to get that panning look.

Ok, After careful consideration and questioning my own ability (as a novice) to judge these contests, here we go:

First Place: GoHokiesGo- "Coming into 13". Your picture jumped out at me right away, the colors are vibrant and the picture is sharp as a tack. The background depicts speed and racing...

Second Place: BenArnold- "Noticed". This photo got me smiling right away. The technique was excellent, the backgound really compliments the subject, and finally the subjects inside the car...loved it! It looks like a fun capture.

Third Place: OT- "Going home". It was difficult to judge this against mrselfdestruct. I think what made me choose going home was the background and how it complimented the subject.

Honorable mention: mrselfdestruct: I can appreciate how difficult it must have been to capture those aircraft at that speed. Great job. I know you couldn't help it, but the sky did not help the subject. I wonder what that same shot with some puffy clouds would do for the subject.

RadAl, Cindi, Jeece, Mishnogram, and EddS, thanks for your submissions, you each did a nice job at panning.

Thank you everyone for the opportunity to judge your photo's!

Thats alright, I knew the sky was not blurred at all, I wish it was. I do think first place was well picked. His picture was very nice, captured the car perfectly and the background was beautiful. I look forward to his challenge :) Thanks for the challenge boomer!

You did a fine job of judging. I appreciate the 3rd place nod.

I think you picked the best, as the sharpness of the subject is spot on.

Nice entries all of them.

Oh wow, I wasnt expecting this, I'm honored. I thought quite a few of the photos were awesome. Thanks for the comments and great job on everyone's photos.

I'm sorta new to the site, so bear with me. But I guess it looks like I have to think of the next topic and post up the contest by wednesday? This should be fun, I'll need to think for a day or so to come up with a good one. Thanks again for the honor!
