I'm a bit confused by one of the OP's comments:

Playing with LR, finding the interface confusing especially the multiple copies of the images it virtually creates.

I dont' see LR creating multiple copies - what am I missing?

If you right click on a file you can create a 'virtual copy'.
Say you have a photo which you like in colour, B&W and Sepia.
You can create 2 virtual copies as B&W and Sepia.

If you search your HDD there is only one file but 3 different config files (I think .XMP?) 1 orig and 2 for the virtual's.

This is pretty much my workflow.
SD Card (I use SD->CF adaptor) in to laptop.
LR Import all files to 'c:\photos\2007\month\day' adding a keyword of the event for all the files imported.
Then I create a collection for the event.
Move the files I like from 'Recently Imported' to the collection i just created.
Go through and adjust the photo's in the collection.
Use export preset to burn them as fullsize JPG's to CD/DVD
Switch on the Tele with a beer in hand.

EDIT: If you ever want to see ALL the photo's from the event, you can just search for the event name you keyworded them with when you imported them :)
