I'm trying to decide on which lens to buy...

Based on my post here:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=285310

I looked at a very stunning image taken with the 135mm f/2.8:

Haven't browsed too many 85mm f/1.8 photos...

What do you think out of those two?

For your low light needs and portraits that you mention in your other post, the 85 f/1.8 will be of great use. My 85 f/1.8 has been getting more usage than my 135L the past few months.

I voted for the 85 F/1.8, a full stop + more than the 135 F/2.8

85 got the edge, very fast ring USM, better build, better IQ.

I had to make this same choice several months ago and I went with the 85 F/1.8 for the extra light. Have not regretted it so far and don't think I will. I do not appear to need the extra reach of the 135. (I use my 85 for candid portrait shots at school events.)

But I consider those 2 to be 2 different focal lengths. either you need an 85 or a 135. Both are sharp lenses and bargains.

The 85 is more suitable for a crop camera. IMO the 135 SF lens is a bit too long for routine use - unless you have a specific need - and the soft focus effect can be duplicated effectively in photoshop.

The 135 f/2.8 SF was a lens developed with 35mm film users in mind, as a long portrait telephoto, and the SF settings were designed to complement this.

Thanks everyone, I guess I will go for the 85mm f/1.8

One question, is the 50mm f/1.4 sharper than the 85mm f/1.8 ? Are they the same besides for focal lengths?

Thanks,
Swift

I believe the 85mm is far sharper than the 50

But absolute sharpness is not that important, especially where portraits are concerned.

Your models will not thank you for highlighting their imperfections ;)

The focal length is the real issue. whcih one suits you better? If you are a prime kind of guy, you will probably need both!

On a crop I'd still get the 85. Unless you're half a football field away, the 85 is plenty long.

In the age of Photoshop..
Soft focus lens is pretty much pointless..
Other than that.. there is no merit for going with 135/2.8 over the 85.8.. except extra focal length.
It has no USM, 1 & 1/3 stops slower and only has 6 blades.
