Used sigma 500 super or 550ex?

Both are the same price. I am using a 30d. which one would you get. I am new to flash, but i prefer to get a powerful one due to skateboarding pictures and such. to be used for both my eos3 and 30d.

if they are the same price then I'd get the 550EX.

All other factors being equal, I think the 550EX is worth more.

It's not quite that simple.

The guide number of the 550EX zoomed to 50mm is 42 meters.
The guide number of the 430EX zoomed to 80mm is 40 meters.

If you mount a 430EX on a 1.6x camera with a 50mm lens, it will automatically zoom to the 80mm setting (automatically accounting for the crop factor), but still won't have quite the reach of the 550EX.

What's more, you can always manually zoom the 550EX to give you that advantage. The most you can legitimately say is that the newer units use the light more efficiently on crop cameras with zoom lenses within a certain focal length range.

Of course, none of this matters if you're bouncing the flash, using a diffuser, or using a lens 105mm or longer.

I was looking at a new Sigma 500 super, when someone offered me a used 550 for the same money.
I obviously got the 550ex, although after reading a lot of Curtis's posts, and others, I'm not totally sure its necessarily the better flash.
A lot of it depends on the sort of shooting you do, and what you want to use the flash for.

I would opt for the 550EX. OOPS! I already did.

550 is excellent. OK not as good as the 580 but still very good and it will work as part of a Multiple Speedlite setup as either a master or a slave unit. That means scope to improve the setup.

I don't know anything about the 500 Super so can't comment on it.

Not at all.
Both do things the other won't.

i will be using the flash to stop motion mainly, and bounce when i am doing portraits.

What does the sigma do that the canon wont??
