I've only had my G7 for a week and I've noticed the AF hunts even with the AF assist beam. I was asked to take some pictures of a cat this evening and thought I try out the G7 for the occasion. I never had an issue with the AF assist beam on my EOS 5. It could focus on a blank wall in the dark. The G7 was hit or miss; granted the cat was pretty squirmy until he got comfortable. Am I asking too much of the AF system? I used all three of the focusing patterns and didn't notice one any better than the other for the situation.
