I came across a deal on some lenses for my rebel xt but the auto focus does not work on the lenses for some reason. I use my manual as much as possible but I am on the fence about this. So would you by a good lens if the auto focus did not work? and does any one know if this can be fixed?

thanks

Assume it can't be fixed and price it accordingly.

If the lens was say $1000 new, to me it's worth $250 tops (1/4 of new price). The risk of buying it and it's a terminal problem is too great.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Depends on the price, and what it will be used for.

For me personally, unless it was a macro lens, or I shot a lot of landscapes and the lens was AT LEAST 50% off, I probably wouldnt buy it.

No WAY IMO!!!!

For 50$, you can get some M42 manual focus primes that will give you significantly better image quality than those...

Plus, I don't assume you would have to pay much more than 75$ for working copies of those lenses on eBay...

Best regards,
Andy

Those are some cheap-o lenses to begin with. If the AF is broken, they are almost worthless.

If autofocus won't work, there's no guarantee that the iris (the variable hole that moves to set the required aperture or f-stop) works. That would be a real killer.

Manual focusing isn't nearly the problem that having no control over your aperture would be.

You could give those lenses. I'd break out my dremel and show you the insides. I love taking things apart. Only cheap things that can be replaced or seriously broken expensive things that are beyond repair.
