A buddy of mine is looking to buy a digital camera and doesn't want to spend a metric truckload on it. I love my 10D but it's more $ than he wants to spend and I've been out of touch with what's current to know what would be the best recomendation for him.

He wants a fun portable digital, at least 3 - 4 mpixel range that he can take pictures of nature, his kids, and anything else he can think of. He doesn't forsee a need to do prints bigger than 5x7 or maybe 8x10 but doubtfull. He's looking to pay $500 or less and wants a camera he can use and grow iwth for a couple of years.

What would you all recomend in a Canon or even *hiss* other manufacture?

Thanks!

Canon 1D Mark III | Canon 20D | Canon EOS 3
70 - 200 f/2.8 IS L | 24 - 70 f/2.8 L | 300 f4 IS L | 50 f/1.8 MkII
1.4x II | Speedlight 550EX

Hi Jesse, I would highly recomend having a real close look at Canon's A80. 4 MP, full control possible, and $399 at Best Buy. Also has a solid rating by users at www.photographyreview.com (external link)

I second that, but if money becomes an issue, the A70 or A75 are both 3MP, which is plenty for an 8x10. Any of them are terrific P&S cameras.
