EOs flash bible is a good read. But to the point of thebody you're using, yo umight want to read up on how the 1 Series and ETTl interacts here:

Coming from Nikon, ETTL might take some getting used to...

On the visual-vacations link: That is referring to ETTL. Your 1D Mk2 will use ETTL2. Something completely different in a few important ways...

Cosworth,

The article you referenced I believe was written before the advent of E-TTL II. I say that because E-TTL II does not weight the flash metering according to the active focus point as mentioned in that article. With that in mind, I'm really not sure how relevant that article is. I believe the 1DMkII was the first body with E-TTL II, correct me if I'm wrong about that.

In more general terms, I find that fill flash works a lot better with the flash metering set to Evaluative, not Average (custom function 14 on the 20D). Other than that, it's just a matter of keeping your shutter speed at flash sync or slower, and adjusting FEC as desired.

That's true. I had forgotten about that. My experience with owning a 1D Mk. II and a 580 was too brief.

Your telling me! all I did before was put the flash on the camera and bang perfect flash shots.

Never mind it's always good to have a new challenge.
Thanks for the help guys.

Here's a more direct link to the ETTL-II part of the doc (often referred to as the "bible") on photonotes.org:

My god that triple flash invention on page 3 is hideous, would stop people letting you take pictures of them.
