Well, I figure londuck would be proud ;)

I am finally 'breaking the speedlite habit', I am recommending someone deploy a small-flash-based portable lighting setup. The problem is we are shooting on location and the second is that we are not always guaranteed to have AC power. So we threw around ideas for an afternoon and figured battery power would be the way to go.

Budget almost automatically ruled out nice power packs and head units. Sure, there are some wonderful systems out there, we simply cannot afford them by any stretch of the imagination. However, what we lacked in budget, we can make up for it in low power requirements. We don't require thousands of watt seconds, in fact, 150WS and below are actually quite OK. So even if we could buy the nice field power packs and heads, we wouldn't need their capabilities.

So.. let me run this setup thru you guys...

2 x Vivitar 285HV
2 x Impact flash brackets (I have one of these, they work great)
2 x umbrellas
2 x $15 tripods from the local store. They'll go high enough, and they are cheaper than the lightstands. Finally a use for the cheap crap tripods? :)

And sufficient numbers of these radio triggers:

So now we're going to have a rig that can be used on site, or in the studio provided we have enough spare AA NiMH batteries.
