So I was decided on on getting the Canon sd600, but while at circuit city I saw the new sd1000. I can't decide which one to get now!

SO my question is... is it worth it to drop about $70-80 more for the new sd1000? Or is the sd600 good enough? I saw the sd600 for $209 online at Dell's website. While the cheapest I have seen for the sd1000 is about $270-280.

I really liked the styling and size of the sd1000, but I've never seen a sd600 in person, so I have no idea how the sizes and sleekness of the two cameras compare. Does anyone have any insight on this?

And... Do you think it's worth it to get the new one?

Thanks.

I can't speak for the 1000, but I bought a new SD600, and didn't like anything about it. I kept it too long to return it, so I sold it. The person who bought it, loves it. So I guess it's just a matter of what you expect from the camera. I expected more than it had to offer.

They're just about the same size and all. I just got my wife, an emphatically non-photography person, the SD600 and she filled 4 GB of cards in 3 weeks of Jordan and Egypt. Biggest difference aside from the MP is that the SD1000 takes SDHC cards, but 2 GB (the largest SD card reliably available) is still a lot of photos.

Unless you're already using a small P&S and are looking to replace it, I think I'd suggest the SD600. 6 MP is enough for a decent 8x10 and if you're new to digital photography you may find yourself wanting more than either can offer, so spending less will leave you in better shape for moving up. If you've got a bigger camera and are looking for a small P&S, yo've got the big one for fancy stuff, so again, save your money. If you're already using something similar, and would like to keep using it but it's died for instance, get the newer model since you're in the camera zone where you want to be.

thank you for the insightful replies.

JustShootin', what exactly did you expect from the SD600 that it failed to do?

And Jon... Yes I did own a small P&S (Nikon S5) which was stolen. I actually was kind of happy because it gave me the excuse to buy a new camera, because I wasn't completely happy with the Nikon, (photos taken in higher than ISO200 turned out very mediocre) so I turned to the canons, which supposedly have a good reputation...

I will admit, I am just an amateur photographer, but I figured my new camera would be somewhat of a stepping stone...

Still undecided, but I think I'm leaning more towards the SD1000... ??

For years, I have been carrying an older 3M Olympus camera on me everywhere I go. Well by today's standards, it's slow and bulky for that purpose. So I got the SD600 for it's compact size and fast start up time. But after many test, I found that my Olympus would take a better picture than the SD600 in most any condition. Since all these little cameras are not too good in low light, many grab shots need flash. The 600 has one of the weakest flashes of any compact I have ever used. And is it ever close to the lens! Bottom line...I still carry the old Olympus everywhere I go with results that suit me. Anyone I know who has the SD600, likes it, includung the person I sold mine to. So my personal dislike for it doen't make it a bad camera. It's just not for me.
