Sorry if this question comes up about once a day, but this is my situation.

Will I notice a difference between a normal PNY 1gb (not even sure what speed it is, just the normal PNY compact flash), and an Ultra II 1gb on a Rebel 300D?

In my case, is the PNY or the 300D the limiting factor in the write speed?

Would I notice an even bigger jump in speed going to an extreme iii?

Thanks for your help.

Rob Galbraith CF Test on the 300D (external link).
Rob on the 10D (external link).
He doesn't have any results for PNY in the 300D, but the slightly older 10D is about 20-25% faster writing to a "new" Ultra II than to a PNY. The 10D's also a bit faster with the Ultra II than the 300D is. You won't magically see your camera's performance jump, but if you need more memory, an Ultra II would be a good choice. An Extreme III is another 10% faster than the Ultra II, so you're looking at potentially 40% better performance in writes. That's almost a full frame's difference in clearing that 3 frame buffer if you shoot bursts or close-together shots.

The 300D is the bottleneck.
When you look at the charts linked above, also take a moment to see how the same cards perfrom in a 30D...

the 300D and 10D, (and older models) are notoriously slow.. and can not take full advantage of a high speed card. That said, as Jon pints out, if you do get a fast card, you will at least get the best the camera has to offer, but the difference in speed will be very small.

I have a 1 gig PNY card that is painfully slow on my 300D, compared to Sandisk Extreme III cards on the same camera.

However, on my 20D, the speed difference between CF card brands is hard to notice. The PNY on the 20D is much faster than the Sandisk cards on the 300D. Go figure.

Aparently there's more going on than just read/write speeds of cameras and cards. Some just seem to interact better than others.

In any event, I would not recommend a PNY card for a 300D based on my experience.

Check out this little test I ran here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=294188

Compares my UltraII with a cheapy $10 PQI. Yes there's a difference.
