George Barr on the Luminous Landscape site is putting together a great series of essays on Technical and Aesthetic levels. Take a look at part 1 and 2 below. Part 1 has the breakdown of the levels.

So which level do you think you are at, at the moment? Don't be shy, your name won't appear in the poll.

I think I'm between ranges, as I think we all will be. Technical 3-5, Aesthetic C-E. Most of the time at the lower end :-)

Please do not criticise anyone's decision to grade themselves, this is meant to be our understanding of one's self. Not a judgement.

Choose your average or lowest rating for Technical and Aesthetic.

Part 2:

Summary

Technical
1 - Obvious flaws
4 - Looking good
6 - Virtually perfect

Aesthetic
A - Not even a good snapshot
D - Showing some value
G - You are Ansel Adams reincarnate

Here you go:

There's nothing to criticize about either the image itself or its presentation. Print manipulation is competent and invisible. Prints show subtleties and have depth. Tones are rich and absolutely nothing is overdone. Unfortunately that just leaves the aesthetic issues, a much more challenging problem to solve.

Level G Aesthetic
These are the great images of history – the ones, that make you weep or cry out or swear. These are the handful of images so exceptional that even the best photographers in history have only able to make a few at best. Here lies 'Pepper Number 30', but not many other Edward Weston images, this includes the best of Ansel Adams but not all. It doesn't mean that we mortals can't create an image that fits this category, we’d count ourselves lucky if it happened once. These are the magical images, the ones that glow, that so perfectly get the message across they become icons of photography. They might be 'Migrant Mother' by Dorothea Lange or the Steve McCurry Afghan girl portrait, the 'napalmed girl running' image, Winter Storm Clearing by Ansel Adams, and several Henri Cartier Bresson images.

;)

I won't copy the text off the LL site. The low, mid, high breakdown goes something like:

Technical
1 - Obvious flaws
4 - Looking good
6 - Virtually perfect

Aesthetic
A - Not even a good snapshot
D - Showing some value
G - You are Ansel Adams reincarnate :-)

It is really harder to choose categories for ones self than it is to actually critique.

I went for a high "E" and a "5," though some his commentary doesn't apply to me, as mine ends up in newsprint.

I don't think I've started to generate truly emotional responses until I start to examine some pictures I took very recently, where people really were emotional and I was able to capture them.

Probably around 3 D
But I have plenty of time to improve.

I had a really hard time since I do mostly sports/action and the descriptions/categories are obviously geared toward the art/still side of things. 4-5 technical, anywhere from a B to an E on the aesthetics, depending what I'm doing (I suck at artsy stuff and stills, just no creative/artistic vision, but I can find and capture some very cool action shots.).

5 E. I know how to take the picture and PP it, I'm just not great at determining the picture to take properly.
