Hi,

Took this picture today and I've been PP'ing it ever since I got back. I can't make up my mind about it and have now been looking at it for so long I have no idea what to do...need to go and watch some telly!

IMAGE: http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3/perfect_pixel/stat1.jpg

First question is what do you think of the picture?
Second question what improvements would be worth doing?

Original (resized to 50% of original for uploading but no other PP) is HERE (external link) if anyone wants a project :D.

I can't improve on Franko's edit. He got the contrast, the splash of color and the crop that I would have.

Well I see you have both cropped the pillar out of the left hand side which was one of the things I was agonising over (should I? shouldn't I?), so that seems conclusive!

Another question is which picture do you prefer the one above or this one from a different angle?:

Just for a bit of context this is one of the last two statues in the Temple of Apollo at Stourhead Park. They are in the alcoves at the front of the temple facing over the lake:

Full statue of the female is:

Male statue looks like:

Just thought this might add a little interest! Thanks again for looking and your help.

Steve

Here is my answer.... although the statue is weathered and chipped, the beauty is that it makes for a great photo.

First I ran an unsharp mask action, then step two was to crop slightly, then I adjusted the contrast slightly, and adjusted the levels to 00-1.06-223... Ok, maybe I cropped quite a bit

Thanks for letting us play with it...

I don't think that it can get any better than Franko's edit.

Here are my changes.

The first is just levels adjusted and a warming filter added.

The second was made from the first result, duplicated the background layer, added gaussian blur and set blending mode to overlay.

Thanks for all your ideas. After having slept on it I see that my first one had just got dull looking and I'd lost the nice reddy-brown lichen which was what drew me to the picture in the first place.

I think that I agree with people about Franko's edit. It just looks nice and clean.

kmorgan I really like your first edit. It seems to emphasise the imperfections and is like what I had envisioned originally. Your second is a little extreme for me although I still like it, it's very dramatic.

Thanks again everyone!

Steve

Here a couple of version from me. The first one has a little colour in it, and a green tone. The second one is just mono. The first one has 5% of Uniform Noise added while the second has 10%. Contrast were heavily boosted in both. There's a bit of saturation reduced in the first one too. A little bit of USM applied to both as well.

Regards.

Here's one also. Not going for any special effect or anything, just a few minor adjustments (including a crop).

A bump in contrast, some color and saturation adjustment, other minor things.

I guess we all pretty well agree on the cropping. My opinion is that you either crop (as others have done), or you shoot to include the surrounding alcove to frame the statue. The problem is that you're shooting up, and although the sides of the alcove are parallel, they won't come out that way, and it will require a lot more PP.

If you could get way back and/or shoot from mid-height of the statues the problem could be overcome, but I doubt that option is available.
