A Bogen/Manfrotto 486RC2 ball head makes a nice 4-inch (plus a little) extension for my 680B monopod. It adds greatly to the versatility of the package as well.

8" is too short - you need to either (a) practice using it while kneeling or (b) find a way to return it. (I'd choose 'b'.) If you do any serious shooting with this, you will be feeling it in your neck big time in short order. You can get away with 2" to 4" with a ballhead, but 8" is a lot to make up.

Also, when you use it outside, it seems that they just get shorter. ;) If the ground is soft, if you have it at a slight angle (recommended) or there is a small dip in the ground, all eat up length quickly. Generally, I prefer my monopods when on a hard floor to be about 2-4" too high for me to see through the VF.

well like i said that 8" was a bad estimate. with the grip and everything the camera eyepiece is now almost exactly eye-height. what i found was interesting is that now with the camera higher i relax my shoulders and that goes a LONG way to holding steady.

Wow, I am 6"4 and my Manfrotto fits very nicely. As others wrote, the ball head will extend it some. You might consider trading your current one in if still new and have a receipt, there are other Manfrottoss out there that will fit ya.
