Here's an article I knocked up recently that shows you how to apply high levels of sharpening to very defined edges in your shots.

It's not suitable for fur or feathers though. As with all sharpening methods, there's a time and a place. This method suits me fine for urban/mechanical type shots.

Comments for improvment would be appreciated, but bear in mind that this doesn't pretend to be a "one method suits all" sharpening technique.

one sugestion apply the sharpening to a background copy layer then you can adjust the level of sharpening further fine tuning it.
Playing with it I got better results way over sharpening on the copy layer then adjusting the opacity of the layer.

That's a very worthwhile suggestion, I'll Have to add a section in there with some potential adjustments. Another suggestion has been to use one of the red green or blue channels as the template for the "Find Edges" filter, or to ramp up the contrast on a duplicate layer before running the filter.
