Had a pleasant walk with my lovely wife around RHS Wisley this afternoon and just before making it into the shop I heard the chirping of this robin. My wife quipped that he was only staying there because I didn't have my camera out, so I decided to test that theory.

To my surprise, he carried on singing to the world, I got within a few feet and he didn't seem to mind. I got a few nice'ish shots (the sun wasn't shining), but unfortunately I only had my Canon 100mm macro lens on and didn't want to change lenses in case I missed the moment. Hey ho, it was quite an experience and really made my day :-D

This is straight out of the camera, no cropping, a little USM. 800 pixels doesn't really do it justice.

Feel free to comment or critique.

Cheers,
Ben

Love the earthy tones in this shot and the fact that it's so sharp. Well done.

Nice shot. Interesting what robins in the UK look like.

Beautiful shot. Don't discount that 100 Macro too soon. Some of my best small bird shots were taken with the Sigma 105 Macro lens. They are way fast and very sharp, allowing for cropping to make up for what you lose with a long lens. ;)

Thanks.

Interesting comment about the macro lens. I find it's the slowest lens I own (focusing speed wise), but that doesn't normally matter as the subjects I'm pointing it at don't normally move that much! Mind you, the robin may not have been quite so cooperative if I'd been pointing a 300mm f/2.8 at it ;-)a

Cheers,
Ben

Ben, I meant fast in f/stop. Yeah, the Sigma is a turtle when focusing.

Thanks :-) I was grinning all afternoon after taking it, was amazing being so close to a robin without him flying off.

Cheers,
Ben
