I am looking into picking up a light meter pretty soon and was looking for advice. I do weddings and portraits (in studio, with some location work) I currently have an Alien Bee B800, and 2 Sigma Super flashes, and am interested in simplifying and nailing down my flash/strobe technique. I want to pick up a Sekonic L-758DR at the end of the day, but I'm not able to shell out $500 right now for a meter, and was going to start out using one of their "lesser" models to get my feet wet and then I figured I cold reclaim some $$ by selling when the time comes for the 758.

What do you all think of these 2? Give me the lowdown if you will...

Sekonic L308
and
Sekonic L358

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Either the 308 or 358 will be fine.

As you might expect the 358 has more features, but the 308 meets all of the fundamental needs of a meter.

The 308 is light, compact, accurate, and relatively inexpensive.

It is also likely that whichever of these two meters you choose, you will have no need to upgrade later.

Enjoy! Lon

As noted above, either will give you good service. I'm partial to the 358 because I own one, but I also think its versatility is such that it might be the only meter you will actually need.

I highly recommend the Sekonic L-358. It's an outstanding meter.

On the 358 you can add a radio modul so you can trigger pocket wizards :) Just got the 758DR myself, you got something to look forward to ;)

Hi Angel_LCD,

Do you love your 758DR? I'm getting one this week. Anything good or bad to report?

Cool!!!
I'm really looking forward to the Spot Metering and I expect to be getting Pocket Wizards in another month.

Have you connected the meter to your computer and looked at the software? Tried the camera profiles?

Ahh ok. To make your own profile you need the calibration chart that you shoot to create a profile. Do you own the chart?

I was just looking on BH. The Calibration Target sells for $100 (doh!) and even though you can download profiles for many popular cameras, due to inconsistencies in cameras, sensors and meter sensitivity, to ideally have an accurate profile you need the calibration target. That would explain why many users of this meter are not using custom profiles. Getting the target up's the price of a $500 meter to a $600 one.
