Too bad, really i was going to shoot the moon today, the sky here is clear too and i like the Half moon.
I hope tomorrow the moon is half too and the sky is clear, but why i can't get sharp shot when i used my 100-400L with 2x on my 3D or 1Dsmk2 or 1Dmk2N?
so out of my gear what combo should i try tomorrow or next time?
I got shot of the moon by my 300+2x but i think i didn't cropped just worry of losing IQ.
I will have another try and i am sure it will not be so far than this shot above.

Looking at your gear list, I guess your best bet is 20D + 300 2.8 IS + 2x + 1.4x.

I'm guessing that the 300 2.8 can do well at the moon up to at least 4x TC, as my Sigmonster and 500 f4 can gain detail up to 2.8x.

ok, instead of 20 [Because i don't have] i will use 30D [which i have].
I will give it a try tomorrow and i will see.
Thank you very much and you tempting me everytime i see your moon shots as it is my favorite subject, but i didn't do much to make it as great as yours, this time i will be sure to do it perfectly.

Romy, your moon shots are always excellent. I know that you've got the skill and technique right. What's surprising is how well your 100-400 performs with a 2X telecon. I consider mine a good copy, but I'm certain that it would not do the job with my 2X. Of course, I'm going to have to try now! :)

Nice job!

Tom,

Here's a processed 100% crop of the posted shot from the 100-400 + 2x. Even with my excellent copy of the zoom, I guess 2x is the maximum I can put on it. IQ starts to be an exercise of diminishing returns beyond 2x on this lens.

I agree, though I would venture to say that the 1.4X is about all I'd use with mine. I have to admit though, that I've never tried the 2X with it. I may fumble around with that combination when I get some time. Even with the 1.4X, you end up stopping down quite a bit to obtain best performance. If I recall, I was getting my best results around f/13 or f/14 when shooting at 560 mm (going from memory here).

liquidstone,
I think you're getting a bunch of us 1-4 owners to think about that 2X TC now.

Great shots as always.

It's been exceptionally clear the past few nights in NY too, but I haven't even ventured to try after seeing your work in the past.

Romy, I might have to hire one of these sigmonsters and have a go myself. I am a bit conserened about light polution though as I live near London, I guess I could drive to the sticks and then have a go.

How is the light polution where you are?

Light polution shouldn't affect a moon shot too much as long as its a clear night. Usually the best nights in the UK are in winter when its nice and cold  but this will reduce the sensor noise too. ;)

Light polution is more of a problem with long exposures of stars, especially when there is slight cloud that catch the light.

A thought: Isn't the moon seen larger in the Philipines than UK (nearer the equator)? ? ?
