This is my first Sigma, and I thought that the 10-20 HSM was supposed to be somewhat quiet. This lens sounds like my canon 50 1.8 non-USM.

Is this normal? Also appears that I may have some of the right side softening others have posted about.

Since I purchased this used and have no receipt (or warranty card nor box for that matter) what are my options? Does Sigma offer repairs?

I've tried emailing the seller a few times and have not heard back.. starting to feel like I got screwed on this one :(

Any assistance is appreciated.

My 10-20 is very silent, not even close to focus noise of my 50 1.8. Sounds like you have a problem, but I do know from experience that Sigma is very good at repairing their lenes and have a quick turn around.

Noise??? I can't hear anything on mine. Repairs can be a pain though and the time it takes for a turn around.

Emailed Sigma. Looks like they might be based in Long Island, NY - about a 40 minute drive from Manhattan.. wonder if I can bring the lens to them personally.

Mine makes a little noise, but is far from what I'd call noisy.

If you are used to Canon USM motors, it may seem loud. Sigma motors are almost all louder than Canon USM, in my limited experience.

Close to silent on mine. But no experience with repairs. And I was fortunate to get a good lens with no soft areas.

Is there a reason people really care about the noise of the motor? I've never even noticed the sound, if it's there at all.

Usually I dont mind a little noise from the gears as it focuses- but this sigma makes chattering noises too as it locks on a target. Kinda sounds like something is loose and what I hear is plastic on plastic. I'm 100% sure the previous owner dropped or squished the lens.

Got a response from Sigma and I'll be shipping it to them to get an estimate.

If you bought it through eBay, or paid with paypal, or with a credit card, you may have recourse, depending on how it was listed and if the listing said it was fine.

I had the Sigma 10-20 and it was almost silent. Sigma customer service is very good. Call them and see what they are willing to do. They may pleasantly surprise you.
