I bought a P&S instead of a lens!!

Thought I'd share this with you, and tell me if the logic behind it makes sense to you, because it did to me for some reason. I sold my SD700 to a friend for only $100 with a 2gb ultra II in it (I'm a nice guy, I know.) I had a choice to get either another lens (135 f/2.8 or maybe at a stretch the sigma 50-150) or to upgrade my "P&S" world. I went with a SD800 instead. Now I never use telephoto. I shoot portraits, street stuff, candids, and landscapes. I find my current line up more than enough in terms of both lowlight ability and focal range. I figured when I don't bring out the big guns, I might as well have the biggest gun in the P&S world (G series don't count). So did I make the right move you think?

You have capable glass for what you shoot, so I don't think it's such a crazy idea. The "buy glass first" philosophy has to stop somewhere.

Should've got an IS. But if you dont do zoom, what you have seems enough. The 50-150 would have added that little zoom you might do but still, saved money getting a P&S

The SD800 is a very capable p&S. You will like it.

Thanks, I was hoping I wasn't losing my mind. Mostly everything I shoot is well within range. If it isn't I can walk to it. I don't do wildlife, birding, motorsports, sports (other than basketball where im at the baseline) so I couldn't justify yet another tele lens. The SD800 seemed more practical to me as it's the same range as my 17-55, but in a smaller package for when I don't want to bring my big boys to the event.

I have an SD800 and it is an awesome camera so long as you dont do a lot of indoor flash photography. The red eye is terrible with this little p&S but thats about my only fault with it. Then again most p&s's suffer from this.

Yeah, and red eye is nothing a real quick PP job can't handle. I never found red eye a problem. Sometimes I use it to a creative advantage lol.

i need a new P&S. my 4mp elph is long in the tooth and i keep getting card errors.

i use my P&S mostly for macro for ebay and other sales. my sales on ebay and elsewhere actually fund my hobbies and then some .

Here is a photoshoot my 9 year old daughter did last night with her webkins using this camera. She even made her own backdrop. For some odd reason there was no redeye though

Sounds great. I didn't know there were so many new features on the SD800 over the SD700. Improved IS, face detection, sharper LCD. Looks like it was worth the investment. I picked up a humble 2gb sd UII to go with it for only 40 bucks. The P&S's sit in my bag with the rest of my gear, as I bring my gear everywhere. It's just a matter of what'll be sitting in the car and what'll be in my hands now.

If I were you OP, I would stop buying and selling equipment (and loosing money in the process) and get into a photography class.

Know each of your equipment, learn how to use their potential and take better pictures.
I know, some of us (including me) love the feeling of acquiring new rig - but there's so much things you can do to improve your self - one of them is developing your very own style.

And next time you go out and buy something - research them for at least a few days from non-biased sources. Who knows, after those few days, you will realize that you dont really need or want it.

Just my opinion so you may take or leave it - No offense meant or anything.
