Hi
When i plug in my Ixus 430 to the computer, it appears in My Computer as a "Ixus 430" under "Scanners and Cameras" or something along those lines. Is there any way that I can get it to be recognized as a removable drive? ie so it gets assigned it's own drive letter?
Cheers!

drive letter

It doesn't need a drive letter. You can open it up and store things on it or take things off. Getting drive letters is cumbersome because it sometimes means the drive letters of other drives is changed. The camera ia recognized as a temporary drive because its only there when the camera's driver is running.

The reason i want it to have a drive letter is to run a file recover program on the CF card - the program will only let me select drives and wont let me select the Ixus. I can run the program on my Olympus with smartmedia, as it comes up as a new drive with a new drive letter when i plug the camera in.

The best way is to buy a $10-$15 USB card reader. Saves time. Let's your cam alone. Etc....

Card Reader

The card reader is certainly a solution. I used one with my old Casio camera very nicely. But I find it very convenient to plug the camera in and quickly download my shots without having to pull the card out every time. God knows these Canon cameras are breakable enough.

And most important: when you buy a 2.0 USB-Cardreader it's about 40 times faster

EOS 350D/Rebel XT, Sigma 18-125 & 55-200mm.

Canon in it's infinite wisdom has seen fit to install USB and or Firewire pposrts in it's cameras that aren't "real"

ei: They do not support the USB Mass Storage protocol.

This means that they only way they wil work is with a supporting OS and proper drivers installed.

It's a shame really...
