I hope people selected from personal experience. Many lenses I did not include in this poll. Notable ones include EF 100-400, and EF 400/4 DO.

Well, its either the 400 F/5.6L or 500 F/4L IS for me. I voted for the 400L as I take it hiking and its easy to bring along.

I would think the 100-400mm makes a great BIF lens...

it does but in my own opinion, not even close to how good the 400 f5.6 prime is for that purpose.

True, the prime would have the nod in sharpness. How does the AF compare between the two?

I'm thinking the flexibility with the zoom would be a benefit, despite any loss of IQ?

The AF speed of the prime wins in this case.

the lightness and AF speed of the 400 5.6 makes it the easy winner here

Depends on the bird as well. Big raptor type birds aren't that hard to get with the 500mm while the little chicks are too quick for this size lens.

I voted for the 400 f5.6L. I like 300 f2.8LIS without TC better, but it wasn't a
choice, of course it might not be long enough for many bif shots.

Well I have a vote for 400 5.6 if handheld, or the 500 or 600 mounted on a Wimberley with or without extenders.

I have the 400 F/5.6L and 100-400L, those are my opinions. The 500L is a want of a lens, can't comment as of yet :)

Oh, and I have the 300 F/2.8L IS ;)

Well, in fact no comparison of 400mm f/5.6L with any other glass due to following reasons:

a. This is one of the few glasses one can comfortably handhold that is necessary for BIF
b. Good reach
c. Autofocus is lightning fast
d. Wonderful image quality
d. Affordable price

Not having IS is not an issue here as BIF has to be shot at high shutter speeds wherein IS is useless rather, may become a liability.

Sample from my flickr stream:
