I'm thinking about jumping on the 1D II train, but I'm at a loss for which lens to get that will give me a normal ~50mm FOV. I know the 35 f/1.4 L would give a 46mm equiv, but the price is too great. The 35 f/2.0 would work, but I'm leery of the non-USM experience, as well as image quality.

I've checked other manufacturer's websites for options, but neither sigma or tokina have anything.

Suggestions? Or should I just learn to live with the slight crop on a 50 f/1.4, and take a few steps back?

I like the 50, or you can get a zoom. But if the 35 1.4 is too costly, then I'd imagine a zoom would be the same unless you get a 3rd party zoom.

I do just fine with a 50 on a 1.6x crop body. It's a little longer than I'd like at times, but it just means I have to instinctively take a step or two back. I recently got a 28 2.8 as well, which is really close to normal on the 1.6 crop, but I tend to avoid it because the nifty is just that much better...

50mm on a 1.3 body is pretty close to normal. So close, I wouldn't worry about it.

Lots of people walk around with an 85 on a FF body. The 50 1.4 would give you 65. That's a nice midline between 85 and 50 fov. 35L is just plain perfect on a MkII/N, though.

Just remember...you can always crop, but you can't always step back. that's how I look at it. That said, I've both the 35L and the 50 1.4. I must say, on a crop body, the 50 doesn't see much light.

Nothing wrong with a 35 f/2, by the way. Some tests show that it's actually sharper in the center at certain apertures than the 35L. Go figure, huh? It's a very very sharp lens, and it's not too bad on accuracy, either. It's just really, really loud (for a camera lens).

Thanks for the quick replies. I've been thinking along the same lines as everybody - I've already got the 17-40, so 50mm is covered, I was just hoping for something in a much smaller form factor. I'll stop by a camera shop in the next day or so, just to double check.

Ronald - the noise is the one thing that keeps driving me away from the 35 f/2...I can't stand loud focusing. I have heard though that the combination of lightness, sharpness and value for money outweigh the loud AF. Maybe it'll be just the thing to make me feel better after watching all my savings go 'poof' when I click the buy button on a 1d II...

The 35mm f/2 does focus a bit loudly since it isn't USM, but it really isn't that bad as far as IQ is concerned. I owned this lens when I had my 1D, and it performed pretty well for the price. If you can live with the noise, the 35 f/2 is a great buy.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L. 'Nuf said.

Failing that, I used a 35mm f/2.0 for about five years before that. Sure it's a little buzzy but it works - and works very well, for cheap.

I actually agree with everything Ronald said, the 35L is out of this world on the 1D's
