That 500 is the pre-IS version, the f/4.5, not the current f/4 IS.

Yup! I believe CDS, Liquidstone (Romy), and ssim (sheldon) use it handheld, along with many others as well.

Yup!

And the IS built into Canon's super telephotos plays an important role even when they are locked down solid with cable release and MLU
