If you have seen my other thread then you know I'm going to be doing a major comp upgrade today. I'm currently runing an old XP chip (1.5 gig I think) but I'm upgrading to a 64bit 2.2 gig chip. This got me thinking about investigating Windows 64bit OS. I just read some reviews and the most common thing they say is that most programs are still 32bit so it really is of no benefit. The people that WILL see a performance increase are programmers, 3d editors, and photo editors. So, is this something I should consider?

Chris

I installed Vista premium (64bit) on a new PC I built. Works just fine, and most 32 bit app's will work, as legacy system apps. Should be OK to go, just remember, some of the drivers for hardware/software are a pain in the A$$ to configure.

Good luck with it...took me about a week to get everything working in my new machine, but the time investment was well worth it. Core2 Quad Proc, 2 GB of RAM, RAID 0, 512MB PCI-e video ram, wireless internet (pci), USB 2.0, Firewire, etc. Works like a charm.

Here's a link, to my thread.

Although the OS will have a larger address space, i.e. you can use more than 4gb of system ram, I'm not sure if a 32bit app can use the increased memory space.

You might want to check that out before you splash out.
