hi there. a quick question for you guys. i would have though that my interfit IR remote trigger could trigger my 430EX speedlight while switched to slave mode. is there something im doing wrong or is this simply not possible.
would i have to purchase a 580EX for this?

I don't think you can trigger 430EX with "any" IR transmitter. It must be either Canon ST-E2 or 580EX.

How about a $25.00 sync cord and a $15.00 hotshoe adapter for the flash so you can plug the cord in, and not a $350.00 Canon 580EX?

Enjoy! Lon

I would not start my first off camera adventure with radio slaves.

I would first go at this with a cord. Then, if things go nicely, move to radio slaves later, with that cord in backup.

But, I would never move off camera without a cord as a backup, even with the highly reliable pocket wizards.

The cord is the fundamental that you want always there in your bag, even if you have moved on to radio slaves.

So, start with a cord, then proceed.

Enjoy! Lon

Why not start with radio slaves? whats a cord gonna offer that slaves wont? have you priced long cords? the ebay slaves are less $$$ I know what you mean about back up.. i use PW's and still have my 20 foot cords in the bag also. I just hate tripping on them and fear ill pull down the lights and camera... I just chose PW's over the ebay triggs because they are ALOT more reliable.

I agree, the cost of the PW's is a bit much but the ebay trigs do work and if he/she does a google search there are alot of mods to make them better..most of the problems are with the short antenna...

with cords youd need a splitter.. with triggers you need one on each and a transmitter on the cam... if youre gonne be shooting a wedding, id stay with radio slaves despite what others think... with cords, someone is gonna trip and take something out if not themselves, and optical slaves, you need "line of sight" for them to work... so if uncle marty is standing in the wrong spot at the wrong time... the flashes wont fire. just a thought though... do what you need to do to make it work.

For a new user of off camera flash (the nut of this thread), cords offer.

  • Relatively low cost
  • An understandable setup
  • Reliability

You do not want to recommend ebay radio slaves to someone that is just starting with off camera flash. They need someting that is reliable, and straightforward.

You do not want to recommend pocket wizards to someone that is just starting with off camera flash. They need someting that is inexpensive. Just connecing a pocket wizard to a Canon 430EX (what incited this thread) with a Paramont adapter costs more than an inexpensive hotshoe adapter and a cord.

So, start with a cord and grow from there. And even if you grow to other triggering devices, you will need that cord as a backup.

Enjoy! Lon

Don't forget optical triggers can be triggered by IR. Just becasue your eye doesn't see the light...

I have triggered a Nikon flash, a 380 and other using a Sonia optical slave trigger and my ST-E2. Works damn fine except in sunlight as all opticals suck in sunlight.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

...and for weddings with people walking, dancing, crowds, kids running around? good luck with getting a reliable flash with a cord or optical sllave! But what do I know... Im just using common sense.
