Seeing that there is so much vast experience on this site re. lenses, I would like to see your opinion to see what you think is the best lens for Image Quality there is regardless of focal length and COST.

I have listed what I think are the most raved about lenses although I'm sure I have missed some out but I have added "Other" catagory for members to vote and maybe put a description of which lens and reason for voting.

I know that most of us have never experienced some exotic glass but I'm after real votes from photographers who have used these lenses rather than peoples wish list having never used them.

I have only listed a very small number of third party lenses as the list would be too large.

It is possible to vote more than one lens if you think it's too close a call between a couple of your faves.

You're missing a lot of glass that should be up there.

As much as I love my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8....it's nowhere near the best lens made for Canon, and shouldn't be on the list. While optically, it's great, the non-pro build alone would immediately make it lose the 'best ever' status.

You need the 300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8, 400 f/5.6, 300 f/4 IS, 500 f/4, 600, f/4, older 80-200 f/2.8L and 200 f/1.8L, etc rather than a lot of the consumer lenses that fill out your list.

FWIW, I voted for the 85 f/1.2L....I've had a chance to use it a few times, and....WOW.

Well I only own two lenses, so this oughta be easy. My second best lens (based on what comes out at the end of my workflow) is a 17-55 IS. The other (70-300 DO) isn't on your list.

Comparing lenses with widely varying focal lengths, apertures and zoom capabilities is about as useful as comparing a motorcycle to a railroad locomotive. They are different tools for different purposes.

I understand what you are saying but I think it's still an interesting excercise to still be able to compare a long lens to one of shorter focal length as they both still show sharpness, colour, contrast etc..

For example, if you own or have used a 35L and also 400L you would still have an opinion to say which one is a better lens in terms of image quality.

Sorry if I missed some of the longer primes but I thought that very few would have the opportunity to even try those lenses hence they can put it in the "Other" catagory.

I know I've included a few consumer lenses but I feel that re. IQ alone and not build that some actually match and surpass some L glass.

One such example is Lightrules review of the Sigma 30 EX which is compared favourably with 35L

Please can you put a comment to say which "Other" lens you have voted for and why.

What a silly poll. I mean, really. It depends on what you shoot. ;)

it really depends on what you shoot. i voted for the 24-70L because you can use it for almost anything. its weather sealed (with a 1D series body), and is sharp as a tack.
