Unfortunately it's saddled with the same Sony chip as the G7 and P5000, but has RAW and (for me) a more attractive lens - wider and faster.
Not sure about the removable electronic viewfinder, especially if it's an expensive extra. Sigma's optical one (on the DP1) seems more practical/useable.

In the specs list, what do you think that first footnote under File Formats means?:

Settable picture modes depend on image size

It seems to relate to saving images in JPEG/RAW/DNG, so I'd guess it means you can't save in RAW/DNG if you're not shooting at max pixel count.

If it didn't use SD cards (I love compact flash) I would dang well consider picking it up.

However, the Sigma DP1 still shines a little more then this to me.

I agree the DP1 looks to be the Real Thing on paper, but most anything will shine with only the G7 and the P5000 as competition.
As a Canon loyalist, it's frustrating to see Sigma and Ricoh benefitting from Canon's abandonment of this sector.

IMHO, it's a good thing. It will keep prices down, as well as get sigma and ricoh back into the mainstream camera market, like they were in the 80s.

It's always good to see new competition, but I wonder just how much of a threat this new Ricoh poses to the G7. As I have an in-law that worked for Ricoh, I tend to be partial to them, but the DP review of their GR-D was not at all good: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ricohgrd/page12.asp (external link)

Like you, I am waiting for a mfr to deliver on a poor-man's Leica. Canon dropped the ball with the G7, and the Nikon is a poor imitation of the G7. Perhaps Fuji can use its superior and proprietary sensor to develop the ne plus ultra of affordable compact digital cameras.

I don't understand why this is an issue to people. I mean flash memory is so cheap now that it shouldn't affect your purchase. There's fast 2gb SD cards going for under 20 bucks a pop- a very minimal expense.

Anyways, that camera looks great! Hey, I'm all up for competition. This looks like a very ambitious camera that could hopefully help to make canon push a little harder in the G8. The addition of RAW is going to help this baby out a lot as well, its nice to see that they are responding to enthusiast needs (cough canon and nikon).

My main gripe all along with the G7 has been that Canon have been too loose with their naming policy. It is undoubtedly the best 'A' series compact they've produced to date. But that's fairly and squarely where it sits - in the 'A' sector. Not a sector in any way inferior to the 'G' sector, just aimed at a different market .

IMO Canon have disenfranchised the serious enthusiast. To me the 'G' label should denote a realistic alternative to a DSLR, where the final image quality is more important than sexy pixel or zoom numbers. I want a fast lens, conservative zoom range, manageable pixel count, RAW files and premium build/handling. The G7 only ticks the last of these boxes, several fewer than the Ricoh and the Sigma would appear to do on paper.
