My main gripe all along with the G7 has been that Canon have been too loose with their naming policy. It is undoubtedly the best 'A' series compact they've produced to date. But that's fairly and squarely where it sits - in the 'A' sector. Not a sector in any way inferior to the 'G' sector, just aimed at a different market .
IMO Canon have disenfranchised the serious enthusiast. To me the 'G' label should denote a realistic alternative to a DSLR, where the final image quality is more important than sexy pixel or zoom numbers. I want a fast lens, conservative zoom range, manageable pixel count, RAW files and premium build/handling. The G7 only ticks the last of these boxes, several fewer than the Ricoh and the Sigma would appear to do on paper.
