I've just pulled the trigger on a Dell 30" display... 3007WFP-HC ... totally an impulse buy I might add. Anyone out there with this monitor? Anything I need to know about moving from two displays to this guy? I will use a Spyder2 to calibrate it. I assume my Nvidia GeForce 7900GS will be sufficient to drive it. With driving the 30" display, will I still be able to have a second 20" display with this card, or does the 30" consume the card... realizing that would be insane and my desk isn't that big anyways. I can't wait to see Lightroom in all its glory with a 30" display that can cover 92% of the color gamut. :)

Mike,

I could be wrong but I don't believe your Nvidia GeForce 7900GS will sufficient for the 30 inch monitor. The graphic cards recommened by Dell the, Dell NVidia QUADRO FX3450,2DVI/VGA and Dell NVidia GEFORCE 7900 GTX both of which are dual DVI cards which I don't believe the Nvidia GeForce 7900GS is.

Actually, I did some checking on the Nvidia site and they do recommend that card for 30" monitors.... so I should be OK. If it turns out not to be, I'll have to pick up another card, but I think it should work out. The 7900 GS just makes the cut with two dual-link dvi ports. From what others have told me now, it could actually drive two 30" displays.

Keep us informed. I have the dual-dvi ready to support it, I just need to be convinced.

It's a beauty, I built a computer for a client and she requested this monitor for it...Totally awesome, and the 7900 GS should be fine, As far as driving two of those monsters...I'm not sure.

Now I'm reading that an ATI card may be better for image work, and that Nvidia is best for gaming. Its easy enough to make the change if I'm not happy... so I'll wait and see how things go with the Nvidia. What annoys me is that I had moved to an ATI card a short time ago (after repeated BSOD - Blue Screen Of Death - problems caused by Nvidia drivers on an older card), but then a few months afterward XP went tilt and I was forced to do a reinstall. Since I had to redo everything, I decided to upgrade to a new motherboard and all the new ones were PCI-Express, vs. AGP which is what I had bought. Now I've got a high end ATI card I can't use, and potentially will end up with an Nvidia card also. I guess its Ebay time for them.

Since all photo editing is 2d, not 3d (which is probably what the nvidias are slightly better for) you shouldn't notice any difference in the cards, it will work just fine.

We'll see... from what I'm readying, the Nvidias have some issues with 2D at these resolutions. As I said, compared to the LCD a new card is a rounding error... ;)

I will. I should have the monitor by Tuesday next week. It will be a long weekend. For those that think they are sick and have reached nervana with your home system, take a look at this thread I found today... it made me feel a lot better about my aspirations.

Actually, I have had that for a couple months now. I love it as I can open up and edit my 5d files at 50% zoom and fit the whole shot on the screen. No more 16.5% or panning back and forth.

Here is the monitor/machine before installation (with dog for scale):

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

And here is the full installation with description:

DELL 30" Monitor! Beautiful 2560 x 1600 resolution - 8:5 Ratio Wide Screen
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 chip
4 Gb Ram (Have to wait to Vista to address it all, though. Can only see 2.75 Gb now.)
DVD Writer with LightScribe
8800 GTX Graphics

I had a drafting table that fits into an alcove in the office. (A closet when the office was a bedroom.) Built a shelf behind the desk for the monitor. I know that the monitor looks kind of small in the photo below, but that is a 42" wide table!

Another shelf for the PC to keep it handy. As an earthquake (<6.5) precaution there is a 1" Velcro strip running across the upper edge of the PC, from front to back, that keeps it snug to the wall. Another X-tra cool feature is the removable hot-swappable hard drive enclosures. Works like a USB drive, but at the speed of an SATA drive. When full, just remove and label the old drive and pop in a new one.
