Photoshop won't open large JPGs?

Not sure where to put this so I'll just let the moderators decide. I made a rather large panorama today (226 megapixels) but when I go to open the jpeg in photoshop I get the following error: "Could not complete your request because of a problem parsing the JPEG data"

From what I've found this is because my jpeg is more than 30,000 pixels wide, paint shop pro won't load it, says not enough memory. I can view it without any problems in Acdsee and ACR, but I need to figure out how to open it in an editing program, ideally photoshop cs2.

Any ideas? Thanks

It sounds to me like CS2 is finding something in the file that is not quite right. If there is anyway you can upload the picture somewhere and post a link to it, I'd be happy to see if I can open it on my computer.

Your file is corrupt.

Open the file in whatever you created it in, make one very small change, undo that change, then save it under a new filename, then retry CS2.

And if you think that CS2 is the issue, go to Adobe's website and/or call them for support. (They're pretty good!)

Since it is large, there is also an outside possibility that the file was corrupted upon save physically, but the odds of that are slim. There is also the outside possibility that your hard drive is failing; back it up.

why would a corrupt file open in acdsee? it was created in autostitch so i can't make 'small' changes and resave.. its all or nothing and the program didn't give me any errors. in fact i've made over 100 panoramas with autostitch and have never had a problem. i'm pretty sure the problem is with photoshop, just wondering if there's a quick fix

You might just have to restitch it.

Although rare, file save errors do happen. It is usually something very minor which passes a checksum upon save, but it is, in fact, off just enough to cause a problem.

Just for kicks, copy the file to a new location and name, then try again. Long shot, but might do the trick.

And, check to see that CS2 your scratch location isn't full or very close to it; I've seen errors like that when cache files cannot be allocated in other software.

On the off chance: If you have recently installed or updated any antivirus software, turn it off, then try to open.....

Have you checked Preferences > File Handling > Enable Large Document Format (.psb)? I don't know if this is the problem, but Photoshop won't SAVE a document wider than 30,000 pixels without this option checked.

Well I followed your advice and re-stitched it, took a few pictures off the ends to get it under 30,000 pixels.. didn't take enough, it worked out to be 31,500 pixels wide but it opens in photoshop. Thanks!
