Taken at Quivera National Wildlife Refuge. There are both Eastern and Western Meadowlarks here, and this is the best place I have found to get shots of them.

I only WISH I could get a shot like that of a Meadowlark! They are absolutely gorgeous birds and quite skittish. Very nice job, excellent detail.

Wow, that's one fine shot. Where do you find these guys? Like flat fields? Oh, wait, Kansas, yeah, flat. :)

Thanks. This was taken about two weeks ago, and they were all along the road through the refuge. They would fly up onto the fence posts and look around for a while. Good posers.

Last fall I had the same experience there, but they were all Western Meadowlarks that time.

What a fantastic shot of the meadowlark! How far was she? I've been chasing them this winter but no luck. They did a great job maintaining a distance ( ~20 yards) between me and them. I've tried using my car as blind, or on camo. None worked.:(

Much better than mine on the wire. Wish I could get them on a natural perch! Well done!

Love your photo!! I posted a western meadowlark, he came by my bird feeder, first time I ever saw one, I looked it up in a bird book to ID him. One other time, I saw 4 of them, but lately, I have not seen any. They are so colorful and photogenic!!

Thanks again everyone.

Fee, the bird was probably 6 yards away. I was in my car, and it just ignored me. Most of the ones I see are indeed shy and don't let you get close, but it seems that there are always a few who will tolerate a vehicle. It helps a lot that they are so common at QNWR.

Another reason: they are State Bird of Kansas. ;)

Well....almost. The Western Meadowlark is the state bird. This fellow is only a cousin to the state bird.:)

For those interested, here is a link to an older thread with a Western Meadowlark. Note that the Western has more yellow under the eye. The real distinction, however, is in their songs. The Western's song is absolutely amazing.
