Stick some blocks onto the bottom? Not the most elegant fix, but it would work. Couldn't get it as tall as you want for other stuff, though, so I'd tend to think the monopod brace would be best. Are you planning on laying down when using this? I'm afraid I can't really see using either from a crouching or sitting position, but if you're prone, that brace just could be the ticket.

Oh, and as a side-note, how heavy is your lens? That monopod you linked apparently only holds 1kg.

I would mostly be using it for my small video camera, but maybe for my 20D with 17-35 (3lbs). Why wouldn't it hold a big lens (like 2kg) ? Would the pieces not stay locked? I don't see how anything could flex as the weight/force is put into the ground.

I'm not sure exactly, but the Manfrotto page says 1kg. It'll probably hold more, but that's what they're saying to be safe, so I'd stay within it. If it fails while holding more than that, they're not liable for anything.

I don't see what could happen if it fails. You don't let a traditional monopod stand up without holding it yourself, so it's not like it would fall over.

Stressing the clamps beyond their design limits could cause them to slip more often or possibly even break if you attempt to tighten them enough to hold more than the design limits. It's a very good idea to stay well within published specifications when choosing things like this.

With my 20D, I could just use it with my 55-200 (all plastic, weighs nothing), and my video camera. Then I'll just use my tripod with big L lenses for surfing.

The words “cheap” and “camera” don’t go together either.

I have the Gitzo GM-2560T Traveler and while it isn’t cheap it has been a really great monopod for the backpack and traveling. It is lightweight, compact and sturdy. When I’m working out of the car then I use a Gitzo G1558 once again a great monopod for what I’m using it for. Lightweight, massive and sturdy.

hahaha... unfortunately. Maybe I'll get one of those someday. 14-56" would be nice.

Thanks for the links. I saw that first one earlier today. That's a good idea. I could probably make something like that. The ground padding pod is cool, but it's not tall enough for what I need. That would be good up in a tree or on a rock.

edit: I meant short to fit in or on my backpack easily if you didn't get that.

Take a shovel! You can make the ground whatever height you need! ;)

I just ordered one today. I've been looking at that myself for the past 3 weeks. When I found one at less than 15 inches and 11 oz. I thought that would be the perfect complement to my IS lenses when backpacking. I may never pull it out, but at that size and weight it won't bother me. Adorama has em for a good price.
