So I'm looking on Ebay...

Specifically for an XT, but my main concern is the warranty. I want to be sure that a camera will be covered and that it is in perfect condition.

I noticed some auctions say they still have a blank warranty card with them. Is that good enough? Is there a timelimit on filling that out and sending to Canon?

Also one I saw still had the 4 year Best Buy warranty. I figure as long as he send all the documentation I should be pretty safe right?

Any advice/thoughts on buying a camera on ebay?

Thanks for any input.

A warranty card usually isn't enough. Canon usually requests a copy of your receipt, as well as the warranty card. When I sent my G6 in to be repaired, they only asked for a copy of the receipt. This is why I am always amused by people selling equipment and saying that it's still under warranty as the warranty card hasn't been filled out. Now, if the person sends you a copy of the original receipt, as well, then you're in business.

As for the Best Buy warranty, it may be transferrable. If so, you'll be okay. I would check with Best Buy to find out about that.

I think that B&H has the XT body only for right around $500 new. They did last time I looked. You might have better luck that way. You will be able to count on their warranty, and won't have to worry about sketchy auctions.

Here's a link!

Yeah I was gonna get it from B&H, but some of these ebay ones have extra lenses and batteries and whatnot included so I figured it might be a cheap way to get a 2nd lense too...

To be honest, there aren't all that many 'great' deals on Ebay anymore. Most of the Ebay Stores sell camera stuff at higher prices than B&H, and dealing with them can be a lot more sketchy.

Most of the stuff that comes with the Ebay kits is crap. Buy from a reliable vendor, and get your accesories as needed, not a bunch of junk in an overpriced bundle from Ebay. And, to the best of my knowledge, buying used with a blank warranty card is worthless. The warranty is non-transferable, it is for the original buyer only.

If a warranty is especially important to you - then buy from a reputable retailer. they are usually pretty competitively priced. Especially for an older model like the XT, which is still a great camera.

I'm not looking to buy from an Ebay store, but just from individual users whose cameras are still under warranty.
For example, one auction also includes an AF75-300mm F/4-5.6 LD Macro Lense. I dont know how good it is, but it would be a good way to get it for cheaper to start out..

There will always be another one - getting all competitive over one particular auction is silly, you just end up over bidding. People post links to ebay auctions all the time when they are looking for advice. This is a friendly forum, no one is going to wreck your auction. and most of us already have a DSLR.

just be careful with ebay - feedback is helpful, but look closely, follow the links to previous auctions, and check out the feedback left as well as received. i'd still say better off buying from B&H.

Wise choice - it's already gone too high IMO, and most of the stuff he is bundling is low end.
You are better off buying just the camera and a kit lens to start with. Other toys can follow when you know what you need/want.
