Hey all.

This is my first attempt at flower shots. My in laws had some nice little flowers in a pot out the front of our house. That combined with just recently aquiring a 100mm Macro, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Comments and critique would be greatly appreciated. Also... any idea of what it could be?

Taken at ISO800, f/8 at 1/160s. Applied noise ninja and did a little crop/resize/sharpen.

Nice work Feng. The 100 Macro is a great lens. Can't help with the id. I'm in two minds about the DoF.

Good attempt wakko, It likes a little bright on my laptop meaning the white has lost detail but only slightly.

not a bad try there feng, but the whites are too blown out. I also feel it needs to be a tad sharper. However, the background is great. If you shot in raw, try to bring a little detail into the whites, and boost your colours as well. I think a little saturation might help. I was reading an article about macro lenses, and seeming the dof is very shallow, only a few mm's, so it would be very hard to get all the flower in focus unless you stacked. When we catch up next, i'd like to see that macro lens. I am in the market for one now.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I might try reprocess this one, and also might have another go at it this afternoon. Maybe use a tripod so I can use a longer DoF.

@Greg: yeah I borrowed my friends 100mm Macro nonUSM for ages... and when this one came on sale on OCAU, I just had to get it ;) damn spontaneous purchases! :(

@Steve: Thanks for the ID :)

@Tina: I know what you mean about shorter DoF when using macros... that was F/8 :) hehe... but when you're that close to the thing... it's all good fun though... and yup... you can have a play with it... and borrow it if you want to see how much you'd use it.

feng, from what i can understand your dof will only be about 3mm's anyway, when using a macro. (though i don't think that is correct but...)At least, according to what i read. Since i don't have one, i can't really say. Maybe browse the macro section and see what you can find there. Do you know about focus stacking? If not, search it, brian (lord v) has some interesting tips on it. I have only tried it once.
