For those who want to make it but can't because of other "commitments" you simply need to decide what has priority, and how your photography fits in with it as part of your life.

hmm, i'm feeling a little bit value-judged with that "commitments" comment above - mainly because it was enclosed with quote marks and almost has a sarcastic or derogatory feel to it - as though me choosing to spend my day of worship worshipping somehow calls into question my commitment to something completely unrelated: photography

i already decided a long time ago how any part of my life fits in with my faith - and i'm not liking the inference that by choosing to put something else first i must not be committed to my career path/art and therefore my preferences can be dismissed

i understand that majority rules, and if i am in the minority for may's outing then so be it - but that isn't going to stop me asking next time if we can make a date when all of us 'busy-on-saturday' members can join in, even if it means a few of the 'busy-on-sunday' people have to make "priority choices" of their own...

I saw it as a matter of courtesy to consider whether we could accommodate members' situations by making a change on this occasion. It's been done before. I also acknowledge that some GKPErs have to make an effort to fit in with the regular Saturdays that were the result of much early discussion.

courtesy appreciated :-)

All Im saying is if you want to spend a large part of your weekend partaking in other activities don't complain if you miss out on some photography.
We know you can't make it on a saturday, we know why, and we understand. We don't need half a page in a thread devoted to it, and how unfair you feel it is.

The majority of trips are made on Saturdays, but that is because the majority of GKPE'rs (gkpeians?) happen to have more Saturdays free than any other day, and it just so happens that those are the same people who also get involved in organising the trips and making them happen.

Of course if that poses a big enough problem for people, there is nothing to stop you organising your own outing on a Sunday.

So long and thanks for all the flash

I make it:
Saturday 12 May as per agreed schedule
Wairere Falls, etc - 2 for.

Perhaps, SomethingSimple, you could find/devise a "must-go" event on a Sunday and offer to co-ordinate an expedition for us. Perhaps between this GKPE VII and VIII three months later.

I can't make Saturday again.
My old roster was fine Sunday to Thursday, but now I'm working Tuesday to Saturday since becoming team leader. Not allowed any more time off Saturdays either. I took 5 Saturday off in a row for weddings.. - they weren't too happy

How do I tell them I'm going to the V8s?

With such a large group, it will always be hard to accommodate all. That's why I accept I can't make it along.. But will try and make smaller mini GKPE events, which will still often have a fair few people along.

Tony mentioned Whatipu on this Friday afternoon? Kirst and I are keen. ;)

Is there enough at the proposed site to make a day trip out of it? I know Whatipu, but not Anawhata.

A late afternoon walk, and sunset, and long shutter speeds for 30min after sunset would be nice. I know Whatipu also, but not Anawhata. (Both require a fair walk though..) but at least Whatipu is flat.

Hey, I should be in. Saturday or Sunday, whatever, I don't mind.

I am glad to say that I have not missed any GKPEs. Some of them I were inconvienient timing, or I had to give up doing something else to make it along, but all of them were worth it. The Rangitoto, and Waihi trips were particularly memorable, as much for the company as the photography.

We are a diverese group, with differing priorities, and all we can do is try to fit with the majority. But times change, and the needs of the group change. We shouldn't stick with saturday just because that's what we have always done. Wazza can't do saturdays anymore, the seagull has other priorities on saturday, maybe there are others?

I don't mind which day we choose, thats just my $0.02

Whatipu on Friday sounds good, school holidays so i can bring my kids, they are always on my back to go out there again. might need to carpool with someone tho, my steering gear needs some urgent repairs and whatipu is a looooong way to get towed home if it breaks...

yep, i vote whatipu for friday but only if someone has 3 spare seats for us (will contribute fuel costs and promise to be a fun passenger LOL)

LOL @ "the seagull" - makes me sound like some weird gangsta from the 1960's

i don't mind if there are 2 events so that both 'groups' can get 2 go, i don't mind if we alternate days, i don't even mind if i miss this one in may - i just didn't want to be told up front that i will always miss all of them and there's no room for flexibility

and, fyi, i wasnt complaining about how unfair it is that i've chosen to go to church on saturday and will have to miss out, i was complaining that i had been labelled as not a serious photographer BECAUSE i chose church over a field trip

that's all folks LOL - i'm over it, let's move on

I am keen of the Te Aroha trip but would probably stay down there the weekend.

My wife's uncle has a dairy farm about 7km south of Te Aroha on the old road, his son has a farm across the road right at the foot of the mountain. His son is a bit of an athlete, has done a couple of Coast to Coasts and trains by running up & down the mountain (in ridiculas times!!!!!)
They have both told me of the great views and numerous water falls etc. I'll give them a call and get some further info.
