I just got my 50L lens today but something is strange with the focus...it seems to be double focusing on 2 different planes....has anyone seen this in a lens before??? Here is sample pics taken of my pug....shot at f/2.0
Focus on face and in front of her on the rail....strange!

Depending on how far above her you were, the angle at which you're shooting would put her face and that point on the rail, in the same place. ;)

First of all - those are great pictures.

What happend is that the dog's face and the spot on the rail are both in the focal plane. In other words, they are both the exact same distance from the center of your lens.

chilli710,
It happens in other lenses also when there is a shallow DOF and some angle ;)

Here is an example of it with a 50mm f/1.4 (the economy version of your lens  ), see how the carpet in front of the cat is in focus also when the focus was on the eyes.

Adorable pug. Love that second shot. Also, congrats on the 50L.

These guys are right. It's just in the same plane as his face.

Remember that the point of focus lies on a plane that's parallel to the sensor. So if you angle the camera any to get the shot, whatever's on that plane will also be in focus.

Thank you so much, that is what I was assuming happened. I was pretty much being called a liar on another forum and accused of doctoring the bokeh in photoshop and lying about it (why this gentlemen thought that I would feel the need to lie about a dog pic is beyond me...lol). Thank you all so much- I thought I was going crazy.

nah, get the pug first. Much more squishy and better to play with.

....ok, well maybe the 50 is just as fun.

I've had 3 pugs and they were all awesome. Not the smartest little thing, but probably the cutest!
