To learn more about the terminology, The EOS Flash Bible I have heard they makes a difference over the built in flash. Yep! This threaddescribes some of the advantages. Are there alternatives to using canon which are cheaper? (in the UK) After learning about the various features, this threadmight be a starting point. There are always cheap alternatives, but you generally get what you pay for. You need to determine what features are worth the money for your intended use.
