Hi Dom,

I havent either of these but I believe the main difference is that the 420 does not have the manual controls found on the more recent 430

As a newbie! and not knowing what most of the stuff in that table means would a 420ex be suitable for a canon 350d. I am new to slr cameras so never used a flash like these before.

I have heard they makes a difference over the built in flash. I will never be taking studio shots.

Are there alternatives to using canon which are cheaper? (in the UK)

thanks
Andy

Yes, any "EX" series Canon Speedlite is compatible with the E-TTL II flash metering system of the 350D. To learn more about the terminology, The EOS Flash Bible (external link)is a great resource.

Yep! This threaddescribes some of the advantages.

After learning about the various features, this threadmight be a starting point. There are always cheap alternatives, but you generally get what you pay for. You need to determine what features are worth the money for your intended use.

"10."

Sorry. :D

Perhaps this will help: http://www.dpreview.com …08/05082206canon430ex.asp (external link)

In a nutshell, "The Speedlite 430EX improves on many specifications of its predecessor, and includes new features to maximise digital image quality when using a flash. These include automatic selection of camera white balance settings, and auto-adjustment of the zoom flash position to match the sensor size of the camera to which the unit is attached. The Speedlite 430EX has increased its guide number to 43 (m/ISO 100 at 105mm), and has approximately 40% faster recycling time than the Speedlite 420EX."
