I agree, practice, practice, practice. A friend and I had a very enjoyable night practising panning shots in Piccadilly Circus, getting shots of passing buses. Also try firing the flash at the start and also at the end of the exposure for some intereting results.
My first shots turned out duff but in the end you do get the speed of the vehicles dialled in and it becomes much easier.

Yes you can change the firing timing in the Custom Function menu
