I need to display a chunk of my work.

I have never framed or hanged anything on the wall besides a few dollar store inserts.

It's going to be about 15-18 photographs. Maybe 8*12. Maybe 12*18.

I got a quote from a local framing store and with a matte everybody wants more than 50 or even 100 bucks per frame.

Are there any alternative mounting solutions? Preferably cheap.

Thanks

I got dragged in to the craft store Micheals the other day. While she did her thing I wandered off into their framing area. I didn't know that they carried such a wide variety of framing accessories. You might want to give them a look as the prices looked considerably cheaper than a independent frame shop.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I'll second the Michaels suggestion. Last time I was there they were selling 11x14 frames in packs of two for $6, and the mattes were no more than $9. Fancy or high end? Nope, but they look decent and get the job done.

Doc, you are looking for a matte from "Michael's". They are cheap. Our local photo club buys them in bulk there. I have a stack from there. Excellent value.

My wife cruises the flyers for their legendary %40 second item coupon. Keep an eye on your local paper for that.

I just had two custom mounted at Michael's (photos were 17X20 and couldn't find a mat to fit). They only charged me $14 for the matting and I bought a 22X28 frame on sale for 50% off and they put the photo in the frame, used the paper backing and installed the wire hanger for FREE. Very professional job and a total of $39 for a professional looking frame and mat for a large photo. I highly recommend them.

I like Michael's, as all have said, too. Nice frames.

And if you want to do it yourself, which is what I normally do for just hanging pics around the house, any art store should have matboards (Pearl Art does), and they are $5-10 depending on if they are acid free, the color, etc, for a 30"x40" size (makes about 6 11x14's). Then you can get a matboard cutting kit, follow the directions, and mount to whatever size, shape, etc you want (kit is about $40 total, usually. More for extra accessories).

Also, for really cheap frames, Walmart sells 10x13 and 11x14 frames for $2.50 each locally, usually. They are cheap cardboard backs to hang them, but great for giving someone a little present (virtually free printout from print, matboard is less than $1/pic, $2.50 frame).
