What camera and lens for outdoor wildlife shots

My son want to buy a digital slr camera.He wants it mainly to shoot outdoors and take wildlife and scenery shots.Not professional or for money, but for his own pleasure.Lets say a grand or under? Any ideas? Or do you have a camera and lens set up you really like and recomend?thanks!

A Canon 350D and a Bigma (Sigma 50-500) should do the trick. It's a little over a grand but would serve him well.

What lenses do you already have?

I second the vote for the Canon 350D (or Rebel XT). I dunno about the lens though, it depends how heavily he is interested in birding and other things.

yeah, more like 1500 to start with no bag, tripod, memory etc

a used 300d or 10d or 20d and a 75-300 IS is probably the best bet for the budget
