Yes I made "warrantying" up. :)

The zoom head is not functioning on my flash, the 580EX. I purchased it only a month ago, and have only used it a few times since then. I never switched lenses so I hadn't needed the zoom head in the flash to work. I have a few questions about the warranty process (I'm only 18 and I've never had to warranty anything before, so I'm not too sure how it all works). The warranty card doesn't help much, because it doesn't have any info. Do I just fill out the warranty card and send it to a Canon center of my choice or what? And what do I package with the flash? I assume box and all original contents, as well as possibly a photocopy of a reciept and the warranty card.

Also, should I leave a set of batteries in or take them out when I send it to Canon? I assume take them out, or at least put in non rechargeables, because I don't want to lose my beautiful 2650 mAh duracells to their service center.

Thanks fellas.

Is your flash head at 90 degrees and fully charged batteries?

The head won't zoom anything less than 90 degrees and with low batteries.

Is the zoom set to manual? You have to have it set to auto...

I am interested in this answer myself. A friend of mine is having the same problem with his. He told me about it on Sunday and I forgot to look at it before he left. His is stuck at a wide focal length. He said it's been going on a while now and he bought it new.

Since I just recently had my 580EX in for repair, I think that I may be of some help. If you go to the Canon web site and navigate to the service information, they provide a toll free phone number to give them a call. I was surprised to find that I did not have to wait on hold before I got to talk to a real person. I described the problem and they authorized me to return it and since I was closer to Irvine, CA, that is where I sent it. They emailed me a link to a secure site where I could download and print a prepaid UPS shipping label and another link to a repair form that had all of the information about the flash that I was returning. All that I had to do was enclose a copy of the sales receipt showing the date of purchase, the repair form, and the flash wrapped in bubble wrap. In about a week, I had the flash back and it was working perfectly.

By the way, they will tell you to remove the batteries before you ship it. It is my understanding that the repair center actually has its own batteries and doesn't need to steal them from customers. Also, do not send them anything except for the flash -- do not pack it in the original box, do not send the nylon holster, and don't send them the cheapo plastic foot.

Jason, I am fairly sure there is a problem but would like to be positive before I sent it away. In another thread I read about a clicking noise, and posted. Looking back on it now, I'm about 99.9% sure it is a legitimate problem.

Here is the thread.

and bill, thank you for the info.
