I was just curious what the big difference was between these two. I know the 24-70 is the updated version of the 28-70, but I also see alot of people wanting the 28-70 over the 24-70. Can anyone clue me in on the real differences between these two????

Check here...

Here's a good comparison:

I think it's mostly due to price. Very similar lens, lower price.

I also read somewhere that the 28-70 seems to have better flare control at 28mm than the 24-70 at 24mm on FF... I forgot where I read them.

I was checking out the 28-70 for a while too but thought the 28mm may not be as wide on 1.6x

The 24-70 is wider on the short end, of course. The 24-70 is also a bit sharper than the 28-70. The Luminous Landscape page has more detail about the differences.

However, the 28-70 is usually priced well below the 24-70 and that could be a strong attraction for some folks.

Thanks for the fast replies. The 4mm on a FF isn't going to bust my gut, because I'm picking up a 16-35 II anyway. I'm getting a 50 1.4 for low light, and now just in need of a general purpose lens. The easy choice would've been the 17-55, but alas, the sacrifice for the 5D was made. Can't decide between the 24-70, 28-70, or a 3rd party lens, but I haven't heard too many good things about using non-L glass on a 5D.

How about Sigma 28-70 or 24-70 all of them f2.8? Apparently nice counterpart to the L samples and 3 times cheaper. I am thinking of buying 24-70 EX too.

Yes, these lenses are not DC series, which is supposed to be designed for crop factor cameras.

Sounds good to me, I'll have to look into them. I owned the Sigma 30EX and was completely satisfied.

Sounds pretty good to me too, at f&m is quite good rated (24-70), biggest minus is no HSM, so autofocusing is bit louder, which I don't really care for, and 82mm filter thread, which I too, don't care for as I don't use filters on my portrait lenses ;) 30EX is something on my list too :)

I recently bought a Sigma 24-70 and have nothing but praise for it. IQ is great and it's a joy to use. These are from a 20D:

Nice shots!

I'm curious if the Tamron 28-75 IF is also a decent choice for FF, because I don't want a lens that runs into my 16-35 MKII too much.

I believe photozone reported that their copy of the Canon 28-70 had better resolution than their 24-70. But I believe luminous landscape found the opposite - so I think both lenses are very good.

Some people prefer Tamy over Siggy, and vice versa. I personally find Sigma EX build quality very good.
