54MZ has Guide Number 54, 58AF1 has Guide Number 58.

54MZ can be easily changed to TTL/ETTL compability with a very long list of other brands and models of cameras, the 58AF is Canon ETTL dedicated (both have Auto, Manual modes)

54MZ is compatible with Metz wireless flash system; 58AF is compatible with Canon wireless flash systems (the two are not wireless compatible with the other wireless system)

In short, if you believe that you will stay with Canon system forever, then 58 AF-1 is the flash for you. The USB feautre in it will come in handy If Canon put a new ETTL protocol in future bodies.
