I also have been thinking that the 5D might be nice for a 2nd body. After my purchase of the 300 2.8L IS (this month), it will have to wait a while.

I'd offer a counter opinion and say wait it out a bit and see what the III can do. If it's anything like the spec sheet, it's going to blow away anything out there in terms of speed, IQ and noise production anyway. :) I'd (as in me personally :D ) be concerned about regretting not waiting a few months down the line.

1d Mk2 N + 5d all the way! Unless you are so into sports photography and don't really need the full frame of the 5d that is.

The 1DMIIN and 5D sounds like an awesome combo to me

That's my current primary and secondary bodies and I feel absolutely no need to upgrade to the 1DMKIII.....

Easy decision.

You get the best of both worlds if you go for the 5D + 1DN combo.

Yeah, this sounds like a very logical (and excellent) solution to me, but I also think unless you NEED a second body now, maybe even see how life with just the MkIIn goes.. My MkII has filled the wide lens/full frame need fro me with no problems. No it's not full frame, but it's 1.3x crop is very nice and I love my 17-40mm on it. Might be worth a try doing this in stages just to see.

Another vote for 5D & Mk2n. Personally I'm not one to make any choices on a camera that isn't out yet, and claiming things like more Dynamic Range.........well I've heard those stories to many times to believe it before I see it.

7D ......waiting on the 5D3

The Mark III ISO 6400 samples linked here (external link) do look promising!

I have the 5D, want to add the mkII or mkIII this summer. I'll wait and see how everything shuffles out then. Will the price on the mkII be significantly less than the mkIII to influence me to go with the mkII?

I am in the same situation... i love the 5D for the IQ alone but find myself shooting alot more sports lately. Therefore it crossed my mind to get the Mark III when its out. However I really feel there is alot to be said for having 2 bodies... i miss quite a few shots switching lenses (as well as gaining alot of dust bunnies) by only having one body. I would suggest the MII & 5D combo.. as another member said.. then you have the best of both worlds.

I'm going to have to side with Hurricane here. None of us knows what the 1DIII is going to bring to the table, beyond specs and a couple of pre-production previews. Until it's out there, in the hands of actual users, how can an informed opinion be made?

FYI, I'd LOVE to have your problem! :)

We do, however, know for a fact that it's going to crop the UWA lenses. If that's your thing, the 1D series is a no go (at least as your ONLY camera).

5D and IIN is my choice as well. I feel that those teo will pair perfectly. You get the speed and full frame advantage. Hopefully that's the same pair i'll end up with sooner or later.

Good luck.

You have to ask your self, "Do I really need 10fps or ISO 6400? Moreover, will having those technologies improve the quality of my landscape and wildlife photos?"

Another vote for 5D+1D2N. As many others explained, it's just more practical.

I agree with this, two bodies has a great deal going for it. There are many events I shoot which have such rapidly changing situations that different lenses are called for. It makes life much simpler to carry two bodies with the two most used lenses attached, minimising any swapping and so reducing the chance of missing shots because you have the wrong lens on. It also reduces dusty sensor problems and the risk of dropping a lens.

The 1DIIN is a great sport camera but the 5D is better for landscapes and portraits, due to the FF sensor. The DOF control for blurring backgrounds is noticeably better with FF than the crop sensors (although probably a little less so on the 1D's 1.3x crop). Also, you can't use EF-S lenses on a 1D so serious wide angle work is again the domain of the 5D.

I currently use two bodies (20D & 5D) and love it, I used to use three back in the 'good old days' (A-1 and AE-1s) but that was to allow different film types (b&w, trannies etc) as well as different lenses. Before I bought the 5D, I really hated constantly swapping lenses. The 5D is my main camera but the 20D gets prime spot when shooting action / birds etc as the faster frame rate and greater pixel density give it the edge.

Given your options, I would order a 1DIIN and a 5D, they are very different beasts and each has it's preferred environment, owning both gives you the best of both worlds. The 1DIII seems to be an awesome camera but for the (relatively) small advantages over the 1DIIN you will probably get much better versatility and usability from the combo. Of course, a lot will depend on what you want to shoot and your priorities. If you shoot 90% action work and need a big buffer, then the 1DIII might be more appropriate.

As for me, well I've got a 1DIII on order - but then, I already have a 5D :D
