Last night I headed out to intercept the Craighead county, AR storm that earlier produced a tornado just east of Jonesboro, AR. Probably 30 minutes after the storm tornadoed, I was in position in Mississippi county to view it from the southeast as it approached. However, this was no longer a single cell storm and had merged with another cell or two to produce a small squall line segment as it approached my location.

Nothing great was captured but it sure was nice to be out on a 'chase' again, though this wasn't much of a chase. Since the scenario I was shooting was a squall line segment now, the main display type of lightning was cloud-to-ground (CG) action below the shelf cloud. No anvil crawlers unfortunately. Here is one of my favorite shots from the evening.

Later in the night, I got this shot as the shelf cloud was completing its push through the area.

I through together a little page last night showing these images and a few others from this little adventure.

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

That 2nd pic is good.. only drawback is not getting enough of the houses in the bottom of the picture.

My Canon can.. I just need to find out how

Thanks madferrit. I would've liked to have gotten more houses AND more cloud structure, but this thing was almost on top of me! I was in a mad scramble to get to the roof just to get a couple of shots of this thing, as the core was only 3 or 4 miles to my north and closing fast. This shot was @ 17mm with the 17-40, on the 1Dmk2n.

The second one is awesome. If you had had the time to get more of the houses in the shot it would take the breath away. Great job!

Both very nice, but if you had captured the silhouettes of the houses at the bottom it would have been breath-taking. Now there's a good reason to get a wider lens! (Or a full-frame camera) :)

Thanks all for the C&C! I guess I could've tried my 8mm peleng on that 2nd shot, lol. Would've looked wild I imagine.

Great lightning shots you have on your website. I am a huge lightning photographer and always enjoy seeing other shots captured by photographers. Check out Shutterbug Magazine sometime this year for an article I wrote along with some of my photos.
